Performance enhancement drugs should be legalized

For this last paper, choose a topic that you feel strongly about and about which you know something. You also need to choose a topic that you stand a chance of persuading someone to your viewpoint. If you look back at how you were writing at the beginning of class, you will see that you have made some real progress. Your work is clearer, more easily read, and contains much fewer errors. You are making strong, authorial statements and defining them with your examples and illustrations. Now is the time to believe in your intellectual capacity to argue a point and persuade someone to your point of view or to take some action. It is important that you read the handbook and the reader on argumentation and persuasion. You need to follow the pattern demonstrated. This is the time you argue a point that you not only believe in, but that you stand a chance of bringing someone to your point of view. Do not choose polarized topics where people feel very strongly one way or the other. That is the reason why we usually do not argue death penalty, abortion, or religious creed. It is not that people don't feel strongly about these subjects, but most people are not easily swayed from their point of view of these subjects. You are not going to sway someone who is pro-choice to pro-life by telling them about killing innocent babies, nor are you going to change someone who is pro-life to pro-choice by telling them about the rights of a woman to make choices about her own body in the privacy of her own life. If you choose any of the three topics above, and give me the usual cliches about the subjects, you will not be able to get more than a "C" no matter how few errors there are in your essay. Be aware that this paper is your final attempt to show me what you can do. This is the paper which will use all of the skills you have gained. It has more complexity than the first papers, also. Make sure you are definite about your audience and your purpose. Your paper should take a firm stand on the issue, treat the subject with logic and objectivity, address the reader with a friendly, respectful tone, and consider the viewpoint of those who think differently from you. While we are using the argumentation pattern, you will use elements of all the other patterns we have looked at in this class. This paper will probably exceed your other papers in length, as you need to cover all the parts of the pattern--situation, problem, solution, supporting evidence for the solution, refutation of opposing or other solutions, summary, and conclusion. When this pattern works, it is highly effective writing. I do not have a length this must be, but you can expect this paper to be five to seven pages. Double space your essay, and indent paragraphs five spaces. Your thesis should be the last sentence in your introduction. Please place the thesis in bold.
