The audience for your paper is adult, enjoys reading and has an appreciation for good writing, and has some familiarity with the works you will be writing about; however, your audience has likely not thought about their similarities and differences. Your purpose is to identify the similarities and differences for this audience, to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of the works you examine. It is not necessary to decide which of the works is better than another, although if your analysis allows for a credible evaluative conclusion you are allowed to state it.
Compare and Contrast Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” and Barack Obama’s “A More Perfect Union.” Points of comparison must include the thesis of each speech, the historical context in which it was delivered, the intended audience, and the purpose; you must also consider the writer’s use of ethos and pathos, and the kinds of supporting evidence that each writer includes in his essay.
