In the U.S. and other democratic societies there is always a dilemma in dealing with criminal behavior. On one hand, there is a desire to control various forms of deviance. On the other hand, we expect individual freedoms to be protected from government authorities. Are we able to strike a balance between the two? Have we been doing a good job at maintaining a balance or will an increase in crime force us to live in a society with repressive authority?
