With this assignment, students will learn how to “investigate” a topic, and based on thoughts and the facts and ideas gathered from sources, develop and organize the information into a solid conclusion. For many students, writing a research paper can be one of the most intimidating assignments that they will face in a class. In reality, a research paper is only a series of tasks using several intellectual skills. Once students understand this assignment not as a large paper that requires weeks of research and writing, but a series of skills, the easier writing the paper will be. As addressed earlier, the initial step in writing the paper is choosing the topic, the second is choosing a bibliography (sources), the third step is creating an outline. Students will complete all three of these steps in the Research Paper Proposal, which should be view as a work in progress. The next steps include gathering information from sources to assist writing the paper, keeping notes of sources, and writing a rough draft. If students use any of the information from the sources word-for-word, they must be cited using endnotes or footnotes (Chicago style).
